Amid a dismal start to the 2019 season, the Brad Friedel era is officially over for the New England Revolution. On Thursday afternoon, he was let go. First things first, some facts:
• Friedel, a former U.S. national team goalkeeper great, was hired with zero professional coaching experience. His highest previous levels were the U.S. U-19 national team and Tottenham’s academy.
• Brought in to replace Jay Heaps (Longmeadow, Mass.), he went 12-21-13 through 46 games. The club, accordingly, missed the playoffs for the third straight year in 2018.
• Since the 2018 World Cup break, the Revs are 6-17-7. They also have a minus-29 goal differential across that span.
