Bruce Arena has mostly made the right decisions since becoming sporting director/head coach of the New England Revolution in early May. But Arena might have miscalculated when he predicted how many points the team would need to qualify for the playoffs.
The Revolution had an 2-8-2 (8 points) record through May 8 under Brad Friedel, their worst-ever start to a season. Arena set a goal of at least 47 points for the Revolution, which seemed an unlikely total before the team went on a two-month-plus unbeaten streak.
Now, after a 2-2 draw with the Portland Timbers on Wednesday night, the Revolution (10-10-12, 42 points) are three points from clinching a postseason berth for the first time since 2015.
