When the Gummere Cup was founded in 1948, it was a much different era. Harry S. Truman was president of the United States, jazz artist Nat King Cole topped the Billboard charts, "Hamlet" was one of the top grossing feature films and the World Health Organization was founded.
It goes without saying, then, that the trophy, which now goes to the champion of the 16-team Independent School League, carries historical significance. And Middlesex School, a boarding school in Concord, Mass., hadn't won the Gummere Cup since 1976, prior to the ISL's formation.
That all changed this past Saturday.
