New England connections are scarce throughout Major League Soccer, but not when it comes to the Philadelphia Union.
The Union, atop the Eastern Conference standings during the Gold Cup break, have caught many off guard in 2019, with Jim Curtin's team playing exceptionally at times. This run, in part, has been fueled by former Harvard goalkeeper Matt Freese – both in league competition and U.S. Open Cup action.
As part of our Summer 2019 edition, we caught up with Freese to discuss his rookie season. The 20-year-old native of Wayne, Pa., signed a Homegrown Player deal back on Dec. 21, 2018, having earned Second-Team All-Ivy League honors at Harvard.
Searching for increased playing time, Freese is competing day in and day out alongside former UConn goalkeeper Andre Blake.
