Diego Fagundez is actively seeking a transfer as he prepares for his ninth season as a member of the New England Revolution. But the Leominster, Mass., native has two years remaining on his contract, which will complicate a potential move.
Fagundez recently received an offer of a loan to Club Nacional in Uruguay, the deal turned down by the Revs, partly because Nacional did not offer a transfer fee.
South American clubs such as Nacional are mostly in the business of selling players, unlike MLS, which seldom shops players overseas. So, for MLS players, the best way to make a move is to play out a contract. But when Fagundez extended his pact two years ago, he lost a chance to control his own destiny until after the 2020 season, which is a club option year.
