
At the turn of the decade, Marcos Ugarte (Providence, R.I.) started making quite the name for himself in New England soccer circles.
Born in Madrid, Spain, he starred at Providence Country Day, where he was named 2011 Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year. Ugarte also enjoyed success on the club circuit with Bayside FC, then joined the Boston Bolts in the Development Academy.
He stayed local for college soccer, starring for two years at Providence, before transferring to Michigan for his final two years, following head coach Chaka Daley.
The 26-year-old midfielder's latest stop? Birmingham, Ala., of all places, where former New England Revolution coach Jay Heaps (Longmeadow, Mass.) is president and general manager of USL Championship expansion team Birmingham Legion FC.
