The vast majority of players in the Development Academy progress onto the Division 1 ranks. The league, backed by U.S. Soccer, demands a high level of tactical understanding and technical ability – two traits that D1 coaches scout carefully at showcase events and throughout a season.
But going the Division 3 route? It’s a far less common one, a fact that Declan Sung of the Boston Bolts gladly acknowledges.
“That dynamic is something I thought about a lot,” Sung said.
Regardless, the 17-year-old midfielder from Newton, Mass., verbally committed to Amherst in late July.
