When pondering the best-ever women's soccer players to emerge from New England, the first name that likely comes to mind is Kristine Lilly (Wilton, Conn.), the owner of an incredible 354 caps with the U.S. women's national team.
Another could be Morgan Andrews (Milford, N.H.), a two-time winner of the Gatorade National Player of the Year award. Current women's national team players Alyssa Naeher (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Samantha Mewis (Hanson, Mass.) probably top the list, too.
In the same conversation is surely Stephanie McCaffrey (Winchester, Mass.), who earlier this week announced she's stepping away from professional soccer. The 26-year-old forward had been battling a neurological illness and was set to play this spring for the NWSL's Chicago Red Stars, just like she had the prior three seasons.
