In late January and early February, most Development Academy players were in class and training sporadically, either individually or with their club.
Eliot Jones, however, found himself along the Mediterranean Sea in the coastal town of Marbella, Spain. Except this wasn’t a family vacation. It was strictly business for a 15-year-old goalkeeper with professional soccer aspirations with his boyhood club, the New England Revolution.
Jones, a native of New Britain, Conn., was one of two Revs Academy players invited to the first team’s preseason trip at the Marbella Football Center, then continued with the club for the second leg in Bradenton, Fla. He is no stranger to training with the first team — head coach Brad Friedel has extended an open invitation to the youngster — though this step was a memorable one.
