History was made for the New England Revolution Academy on Sunday night.
The Revolution Academy won the 2022 MLS NEXT Cup Championship in the Under-19 age division, 1-0, against the San Francisco Glens in Frisco, Texas. It’s the club’s first MLS NEXT Cup national title.
Midfielder Jack Panayotou (Cambridge, Mass.) scored his sixth goal of the tournament in the seventh minute and goalkeeper Max Weinstein (Montpelier, V.T.) backstopped New England to the clean sheet. An enthusiastic and very well-deserved team celebration took place on the field after the Revs secured the victory, a win that validated the growth of the academy and solidified a strong presence in the national landscape.
"We have put in a tremendous amount of hard work to transform the New England Revolution Pro Player Pathway, with the goal of transforming our Academy program into one of the best in the league," Revolution Technical Director Curt Onalfo said. "Rob Becerra, our Academy Director, and I are very grateful to have the full support of Sporting Director Bruce Arena, President Brian Bilello, and our owners Robert and Jonathan Kraft in achieving that goal. We also extend our gratitude to all the Academy players in our program who contributed to this excellent season. We are so proud to have delivered them a national championship (Sunday night) and are excited to see how far we can take our Academy program in the future."
