One of the greatest players to ever come out of New England has announced her retirement.
Midfielder Samantha Mewis (Hanson, Mass.), one of the most decorated winners in U.S. Soccer history, officially announced her retirement from professional soccer in a social media post on Friday.
"With both sadness and clarity, I am retiring from professional soccer," she posted. "Unfortunately, my knee can no longer tolerate the impact that elite soccer requires. Though this isn't what I wanted, it's clear that this is the only path forward for me."
