FOXBORO, Mass. – As MLS clubs have pumped increased funds into their first-team rosters, the role of a viable, thriving second team has become increasingly important.
The New England Revolution recognized this, with projects at Eastern Conference rivals New York Red Bulls, Philadelphia Union and others well underway. And thus, Revolution II, a third-division side that plays its inaugural USL League One match March 28, was born last October.
After leading a similar project with the LA Galaxy, technical director Curt Onalfo (Ridgefield, Conn.) is overseeing matters at Gillette Stadium, with plans to boost the club’s player development paradigm.
