Asked to take a step back and reflect on the 2018-19 Development Academy season, New England Revolution director of youth development Bryan Scales breaks matters down into different phases.
At the youngest age groups, he talks about players learning to play the “right” way, then at the U-15 and U-17 age groups, he asserts, it becomes about adapting to a professional environment. Come the U-19s, the emphasis shifts to winning, all while controlling games and becoming a complete player.
But as the region’s sole MLS academy, there’s also another measuring stick: signing Homegrown Players who can make meaningful contributions to the first team.
