After 22 seasons and enormous success, Springfield College women’s soccer head coach John Gibson will retire at the conclusion of the 2021-22 academic year.
Gibson will turn 66 next month, and the timing just feels right to him.
"I guess there’s a reason 65 is a retirement age," joked Gibson. "I felt a bit like I did when it was time to stop playing. You find that you can’t do the running or you don’t have that change of pace, and you realize that you can’t play at this level anymore. It was kind of like that.
"I couldn’t give them what they deserved and needed, and I didn’t want to have one fight too many -- to use an old heavyweight phrase -- and end up less than you want to be. The job has changed, as all things change. I’ve been coaching for a long time."
