Longtime University of Hartford men’s soccer head coach Tom Poitras (Southington, Conn.) has found a new home.
Last Thursday, Northern Kentucky University announced Poitras would be the fifth men’s soccer head coach in program history. Poitras spent the last 11 seasons of his 28-year head coaching career leading Hartford. The Hawks finished the 2021 season at 4-10-3 (2-6 America East Conference).
Poitras has deep New England connections, both as a player and coach. He spent significant stints as head coach at Hartford, Southern New Hampshire and the University of New Haven, and he was inducted into Southington’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 and was inducted into the Connecticut Hall of Fame in 2016.
He played at Southern Connecticut State from 1987-91, serving as a four-year starter for the Owls, while leading the team to a Division 2 national championship in 1987. He then went on to play two seasons at the professional level with the Connecticut Wolves of the Interregional Soccer League.
