Whatever Jason Dowiak is doing out in Amherst, Mass., is working.
In his first season as head coach of the Minutewomen, Dowiak has guided UMass to a 9-3-1 record, the program's most wins since 2012. The Minutewomen lead the Atlantic 10 in goals per game (2.46) and fewest goals allowed per game (0.53), proving they’re one of the more dangerous teams in the conference.
Leading the way for UMass on offense is true freshman Lauren Bonavita (Hanson, Mass.). Her 16 points lead the team, and her 48 shots in 609 minutes prove she has the green light to shoot at all times. Add in breakout seasons from midfielder Jenny Hipp and Rebeca Frisk (both 15 points), and the Minutewomen are poised for a run in the A10 tournament later this month.
All this comes after after UMass went 7-9-2 a year ago, dropping four of its last five games. That was under then-head coach Ed Matz, so times are certainly looking up with Dowiak at the helm.
