Make no mistake: Marco Perugini (Medway, Mass.) had an exceptional freshman year in Division 3 college soccer.
The former NEFC midfielder, then playing at Union College, earned First Team All-Liberty League honors and recorded a team-high 15 points (6g/3a) across 18 matches.
But Union didn’t advance past the Liberty League quarterfinals, where it fell in penalty kicks to Ithaca. Perugini, who committed to the program amid a rebuilding phase, started having second thoughts.
"I soon realized it might take longer than four years to turn this program around," Perugini said. "I didn't really want to wait for that. I felt I was ready to compete now."
