New England soccer history was made Wednesday night, as Anna Heilferty became the first Boston University player to be drafted by a National Women’s Soccer League team.
Heilferty, after three seasons at the Patriot League program, was selected in the second round (No. 19 overall) of the 2021 NWSL Draft by the Washington Spirit. The event was live-streamed on Twitch, though is usually held in-person at the United Soccer Coaches convention, which is being conducted virtually this year.
A Falls Church, Va., native, Heilferty spent last semester studying remotely and training with Washington after the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the Patriot League’s Fall 2020 season being cancelled.
