For 23 years, Matt Cushing (Duxbury, Mass.) patrolled the Wheaton College sidelines, developing a reputation as one of the premier Division 3 coaches in the country. The Lyons, during his tenure, made eight NEWMAC championships and nearly a dozen NCAA tournaments.
Tragically, Cushing, unexpectedly passed away in August 2017, leaving behind family, friends and players at the age of 51.
However, the legacy Cushing leaves will live on, as Wheaton will host the the First Annual Cushing Cup on Friday. Other participants are Roger Williams and Brandeis, and there are plans to expand the field in the future, Wheaton coach Bryan Waggoner said.
