The Vermont men’s soccer team is headed to the NCAA College Cup National Championship for the first time.
The Catamounts kept their historic season alive by rallying late in regulation and then prevailing in penalty kicks to defeat third-seeded Denver (1-1, 4-3 PKs) in a thrilling national semifinal on Friday night in Cary, N.C.
Vermont will play Marshall or top-seeded Ohio State on Monday night.
Vermont trailed 1-0 in the 84th minute when standout striker Yaniv Bazini came through yet again. The redshirt senior chested Nathan Simeon’s left-footed cross down in the box and blasted a one-touched strike into the back of the net for the equalizer. The goal went to video review and was upheld. It was Bazini’s sixth goal of this year’s NCAA Tournament and the 10th of his postseason career.
