In one of the biggest club soccer moves involving a New England native, U.S. women’s national team midfielder Samantha Mewis (Hanson, Mass.) has signed for Manchester City of the WSL.
Mewis, who traces her local roots back to Scorpions SC, won the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup and helped the North Carolina Courage win the last two NWSL championships.
The center mid recently returned from the NWSL Challenge Cup in Utah, though it’s unclear when the next domestic professional game could arrive. She heads overseas to England in pursuit of playing time on a one-year deal, according to The Athletic.
