One month into the season, some of the boys high school teams to beat are starting to emerge across Massachusetts.
The MIAA on Friday released its first power rankings of the year, statewide across the five divisions. The rankings, which are used as state tournament seedings at the end of the regular season, are based on records, average margin of victory (capped at three goals in any game) and opponent rating.
While there are many familiar programs atop the rankings, there are some upstarts as well, with conference showdowns and marquee non-league matches providing a snapshot on which squads are the top contenders statewide.
Though the races still have a long way to go this fall before conference banners are secured and tournament trophies are hoisted, New England Soccer Journal is taking a look at five boys teams that have impressed in the first month of the season.
