For the first 11 years of the New England Revolution Academy, conversations among coaches about when – or if – players were ready for that next step always centered around a Homegrown Player deal in MLS.
That discussion point is still active, but the calculus has changed with the introduction of Revolution II, the club’s USL League One outfit entering its first season in 2020.
That extra variable has already altered the pathway of one Revolution Academy player, as forward Meny Silva (Roxbury, Mass.) signed with Revolution II earlier this week in a first-of-its-kind deal. The unique path wasn’t lost on Silva, who turns 18 in February.
