As Indiana marched to the 2017 national title game, where it ultimately fell 1-0 to Stanford, Justin Rennicks was just coming into his own. The acclaimed striker from Hamilton Mass., then a freshman, became a key sub for the Hoosiers, a role they hoped arrived far sooner.
Before Rennicks arrived for his freshman season in Bloomington, Ind., he broke the fifth metatarsal in his right foot while playing for the Boston Bolts in the PDL. Surgery was required, and so was a length recovery.
“Being on the sidelines and watching everyone play was one of the hardest things I’ve gone through,” Rennicks said when reached by phone. “I would never travel to away games, I would stay back and do fitness with the guys. I wasn't integrated with them, so it was tough.”
