Always, the invitation would come at the wrong time. “I’d be covering the U.S. men’s national soccer team for ESPN and SportsCenter,” said Taylor Twellman. So on multiple occasions he had to send in his regrets to the LPGA folks who asked him to play in the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions.
“I had always wanted to play," Twellman said of the popular pro-am event, "but I figured they’d eventually stop asking.”
He figured wrong, because earlier this month – on Friday the 13th of all days – a stroke of good luck came Twellman’s way. The soccer great and New England Revolution legend was extended an invite to play in the tournament which began in a few days.
Could he make it? they asked.
"Such a silly question," answered Twellman, who likely traveled to Orlando, Fla., like a kid going to Disney World. Six days later, he still embraced that level of enthusiasm, even if “my game was a little rusty.”
