When it comes to Division 2 men’s soccer in New England, Assumption College traditionally hasn’t represented the cream of the crop.
Before 2019, the Greyhounds hadn’t recorded back-to-back winning seasons since 1999-2001, and that was six head coaches ago. The program from Worcester, Mass., couldn't keep pace as the likes of Southern New Hampshire, Franklin Pierce, Merrimack and Southern Connecticut set the standard in our region.
But then Chris Payne came aboard as head coach before the 2018 season, and things started to change. A Southern Connecticut alum, he also coaches extensively with the Boston Bolts youth teams.
