In late December, Greely boys’ soccer coach Mike Andreasen was driving to referee a men’s basketball league game when his phone started ringing. It was 9 p.m., and the area code displayed St. Louis, Mo.
Andreasen was confused. He thought it was a sales call and wondered why it would come this late at night.
But Andreasen received unforeseen and exciting news when he reluctantly answered the phone. The United Soccer Coaches selected the 63-year-old Andreasen as the 2024 National Coach of the Year for Large Public School Boys. In November, he guided Greely to the Maine Class B state championship, capturing an unprecedented fifth state title at his alma mater.
Andreasen flew to Chicago on Thursday, January 9th with his wife, Kim, and will be honored Friday, January 10th at the United Soccer Coaches Convention at the Marriott Hotel in Chicago, Ill.
