Tufts, playing in its first Final Four match since the 2005 season, trailed 1-0 against Cal Lutheran as the semifinal’s last 10 minutes rolled around.
But then a gilt-edged opportunity presented itself. Senior midfielder Casey Lam was fouled 20 yards from goal, giving the Jumbos a direct free kick at an ideal shooting angle.
Up stepped sophomore forward Elsi Aires (Westboro, Mass.), eyeing a left-footed shot. Her effort, laced towards the upper 90, found the back of the net. Tufts had forced overtime, keeping its dream NCAA Tournament run alive.
Aires, reflecting on her golazo several weeks later, still had an element of disbelief.
