Preparing for his senior season at UMass Boston, Diego Gisholt (Newton, Mass.) has an impressive résumé.
In 2023, the center back earned Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference honors in the Little East. He also placed on the United Soccer Coaches All-Region Second Team.
This trajectory, arguably, can be boiled down to an early-season conversation between Gisholt and head coach Jake Beverlin back in 2022. With injuries stacking up, the team wanted to try a different look -- and that meant shifting Gisholt back a line.
"He was a winger or a 10 growing up, mainly," Beverlin said. "But we always kind of thought he was a little better once he was facing forward, plus he has a really good range of passing.
