A few years ago, UMass forward Alec Hughes (Glastonbury, Conn.) had pretty much made up his mind that he would take advantage of the extra year of college eligibility that was granted to athletes impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 6-foot-4 former Glastonbury High School and FSA FC standout was a freshman at UMass in 2020, when that fall season was hindered by the health crisis. Still, he had seven goals and two assists in 12 games that season and it sent him well on his way to accumulating 35 goals and seven assists in his first four years in Amherst.
But he’s taken his game to an even higher level this fall as a fifth-year player.
