The New England Revolution tasted just how cruel the sport of soccer can be.
Months of dominance that led to the Revs winning the prestigious Supporters’ Shield for the first time with an MLS-record 73 points went up in smoke after a gut-wrenching penalty kick shootout loss to fourth-seeded New York City FC in an Eastern Conference semifinal at Gillette Stadium.
The match finished in a 2-2 draw after extra time, featuring goals from both sides in the overtime period following a 1-1 deadlock through 90 minutes. Then, New York City prevailed in the penalty shootout, 5-3.
