Former Tufts four-sport letterman Dan Wood was a groundbreaking soccer coach, among the few U.S.-born coaches to guide teams in the North American Soccer League. Wood also got New England Revolution sporting director/head coach Bruce Arena started in coaching at the University of Puget Sound in 1976.
Wood had been in charge of the Tacoma Tides and, after the ASL season ended, UPS offered him the coaching position. Wood turned down the offer, as he planned to return to Cornell for graduate studies, so Puget Sound inquired about his assistant, former Middlesbrough forward David Chadwick.
“They asked me if he had a college degree, but David grew up in England and had turned pro when he was young and never went to college,” Wood recalled. “So they asked me if anybody else had college degrees. I recommended Frank Gallo, who had been captain at Dartmouth, and Bruce, and they hired them as co-coaches.”
