On the latest episode of New England Soccer Journal’s “The Goal” Podcast, we broke down the upcoming boys and girls postseason in Massachusetts soccer for Divisions 1-5.
Host Matt Doherty was joined by NESJ girls’ soccer writer Pat Donnelly to discuss the favorites in each division, sleeper teams to keep an eye on and players who could make noise in November.

On the strong Division 1 boys field:
Doherty: “I think St. John’s Prep enters as the team to beat, but after that, I believe there are 10 to 12 teams that could be there at the end. There are so many contenders and that’s my biggest takeaway right now. Everyone beat everyone during the regular season, so I think it’s going to be a really fun tournament with a lot of upsets. I look at the top 20 teams and see madness happening.”

On similar depth in Division 1 girls:
Donnelly: “You could talk me into any team seeded one through 13, making a run in Division 1. I was late to the party in giving my flowers to Needham in the rankings. They’ve done their thing. They are 14-2-2; they beat Wellesley and Natick and now they are atop the power rankings. But Wellesley, I also expect them to be in the mix. Bishop Feehan has been so good. All their players have stepped up.”
On sleeper teams:
Donnelly: Brookline and Weymouth are two teams in Division 1 who don’t have dazzling records but could make a run from the Bay State Conference. I would also say Cambridge is a lower seed that could make a run. They started the season well. I would put Beverly in a similar category. In Division 2, Marblehead is a team I have my eye on — they beat Masconomet.”
