Podcast: MIAA boys and girls midseason check-in

On the latest episode of New England Soccer Journal’s “The Goal” podcast we provide an MIAA boys and girls midseason check-in.

The Massachusetts high school playoffs will begin in full force early next month, so it’s an appropriate time to look into where things stand. 

Hosts Matt Langone and Matt Doherty were joined by New England Soccer Journal girls high school soccer writer Pat Donnelly, and they discussed the MIAA season to this point, which teams and players have stood out, and surprising storylines to keep an eye on.

Here are some highlights from our discussion:

On a main takeaway from the MIAA boys season so far:

Doherty: “I think in the last week it’s been a crazy week for the MIAA boys soccer scene, so I think it’s wide open in all the divisions. I shouldn’t say all the divisions, but in D1, which I think has, like, 10 to 15 real contenders, I think heading into the year I thought it would be one, two, three teams that really stood above the rest.”

On a main takeaway from the MIAA girls season so far:

Donnelly: “I think so far, especially in D1 and D3, it’s kind of been who we thought was supposed to be good, is that good. Bishop Feehan had, I think, a couple question marks — new faces and all that — but they’ve picked up right where they left off. We knew Wellesley was going to be a world beater. Natick right there as well, as they always are.”

On a bold prediction for the remainder of the season:

Donnelly: “I think Bishop Feehan (girls) probably goes undefeated in the regular season. In D3, it’s easy to go with the front-runner. Medfield probably runs away with the No. 1 spot in D3 three.
