There was a sense of uncertainty surrounding the Suffield (Conn.) High School girls soccer team heading into the 2017 season
The Wildcats were coming off a 20-1-0 season in which they reached the Connecticut Class LL semifinals. Yet they lost their starting goalkeeper, Jessica Cunningham, to graduation, and junior backup Alyssa Cashman tore her ACL competing in outdoor track in the spring.
All of a sudden, Suffield head coach David Sullivan was scrambling to find a reliable goalie.
"We had an open competition; one of our field players was thinking about playing in goal if we needed it," Sullivan said. "It was so far up in the air."
Fast forward to October, and the Wildcats are better than ever, thanks to an unlikely stalwart in net.
