The month of November is tournament time for high school coaches. It is my favorite time of the year because it is filled with all of the excitement, intrigue and passion that is high school sports. The days are shorter, the weather gets colder and the atmosphere intensifies at fields across New England.
I have been lucky to make the MIAA tournament here in Massachusetts the past three years. I also am lucky enough to have been a part of some deep tournament runs when I played at Weymouth High School in the late 1990s.
In order to make a deep run in the tournament, you of course need talent and ability. You also need a .500 or above record to qualify in Massachusetts. The seedings favor the teams that have a stronger regular-season record, but we all know that anything can happen once the postseason starts.
Here is what I believe is needed for teams to play deep into November and possibly earn themselves a place in the record books.
