The Northeast Division of USL League Two acted swiftly in mid-April, cancelling its 2020 season as the COVID-19 pandemic’s scope and toll came into clearer view.
That was weeks before action arrived Thursday at a league-wide level, when the USL announced that its college-heavy summer competition was cancelled entirely. The door was left open for scrimmages on a region-by-region basis, though no guarantees exist.
While straightforward decisions were made, the ripple effects will be felt next fall across the college soccer landscape. USL2, formerly known as the Premier Development League, allows college players to log high-level games before preseason gets underway in August.
