For the first time ever, the Seacoast United Phantoms have captured a USL League Two championship.
The New Hampshire-based club was victorious over host Peoria City, 3-2, on Saturday night in an extra time thriller, in front of a crowd of over 3,000 fans, a record at Shea Stadium for a non-professional contest.
Down 1-0 at the half, the Phantoms fought back to make the game go into extra time. With a 95th-minute goal from Bilal Hersi serving as the game-winner to capture the 2024 League Two crown.
Five minutes into the first extra period, it was the substitute Hersi pouncing on a flick from Alfred Baafi and curling it into the near post to give the visitors their first lead at Shea Stadium. It sent a shockwave through the home support as the Carp tried to recover quickly, but couldn’t make any ground for the rest of the period.
