When Andy Biggs caught wind of the opening for women’s head coach at Bryant University, he was about a 10-mile drive down Route 146 at Brown University. The catch? He was an assistant under Pat Laughlin — on the men’s side.
That potential hurdle wasn’t a deterrent for Biggs, though, who learned about the Bulldogs from the older sister of a girl his father coached in Maine club soccer. She happened to attend the Smithfield, R.I.-based business school, and a reassuring connection was made. The jump from men’s to women’s soccer wasn’t a worry either, as Biggs worked as the director of coaching in Maine and worked with Region 1 ODP girls teams.
After interviewing, Biggs received a call from Bill Smith, Bryant’s athletics director, to offer him the position in January 2015. He immediately called his wife and his parents. It proved the start of a whirlwind period. One of his first orders of business was joining the team on a trip to Ireland over spring break.
