Near the end of regulation in Concord-Carlisle’s 4-3 win over BC High in the opening round of the 2021 Massachusetts Division 1 state tournament, Ben Brown was forced to sub out.
Brown had been dealing with recurring lower-body cramps for the latter half of the season. He had scored in the first half, but could barely run with his team trailing by two goals and time winding down.
Yet, the Patriots scored twice in the final five minutes to force overtime, and when Concord-Carlisle earned a throw-in in the attacking third, Brown returned to the game. His throw reached the box with ease and caromed off an Eagles defender for a stunning victory.
