The Big East conference forms one of college soccer’s pre-eminent battlegrounds, and year after year, Providence College rises from the mix. Ahead of the 2017 season, the Friars are pining to keep their place in that elite category, and it seems that they’ll do just that.
The leading reason? A mix of young and old, with several key players returning from injury. One big name to keep an eye on is Mac Steeves (Needham, Mass.), a redshirt senior forward whose 6-foot-4 frame makes him a nightmare to defend. However, with 27 goals and nine assists throughout his first three years on campus, head coach Craig Stewart said Steeves’ best quality arguably rests outside his imposing stature.
"To be honest, his strength is more his ability to play with his back to goal, his ability to link up with guys," Stewart said. "He has a knack of being able to score goals and score goals in different ways. Bringing that back into the team is a boost, and he’s sure hungry to make up for last year."
