The United States Soccer Federation will elect a new president Feb. 10. Voters will choose from a group of eight candidates, each with varying degrees of experience in business and soccer. One of the candidates is former U.S. men’s national team midfielder and current NBC broadcaster Kyle Martino.
As the nation places higher expectations onto the national teams and the federation charged with running them, it seems natural that someone from Westport, Conn., would be a candidate because the town has long been a haven for successful soccer.
"Soccer started at the high school in 1958," said Dan Woog, the head coach at Staples High School, where Martino starred in the late 1990s. "In all those years, Staples has had only one losing season and that was 6-7-2. It’s not something new. It’s something long lasting and embedded in the town culture."
