No one quite knew what to expect. There always is interest in a coaching vacancy in MLS. There are only so many jobs. There are a lot of people who want to land them.
Even with those realities in mind, the significant level of domestic and international interest in the New England Revolution’s open coaching position pleased Revolution general manager Michael Burns (Marlboro, Mass.).
"The last time we did this was six years ago," Burns said. "I was overwhelmed in a good way, in a very positive way, with what I thought was a much deeper, more qualified, (higher) quality group of candidates than I interviewed six years ago. I think it speaks volumes for our league, I think it speaks volumes for our club. There were many, many more international candidates with what I’d call real résumés that showed interest in the position."
All of those emails and phone calls combined with a few initial targets to create a lengthy list of potential candidates. The number stretched to more than 20 coaches in the end, but the most important phone call took place between two former teammates.
