When Austin Aviza originally was recruited to Syracuse, he didn’t envision playing much at first. After all, the Medway, Mass., native noted how difficult it is for freshmen to break through, especially at goalkeeper.
But Aviza, an accomplished New England Revolution Academy and U.S. youth national team player, found himself in a fortuitous situation: Alex Bono, then a junior, left school early and signed a Generation adidas contract with Major League Soccer. Bono ultimately was drafted by Toronto FC, and has since backstopped the Canadian side to the 2017 MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield.
