Sam Cunniffe spent a lot of time last fall streaming SMU men’s soccer matches on ESPN+.
He had plenty to watch, too, since the Mustangs advanced to the NCAA Division 1 Elite Eight under coach Kevin Hudson. Throughout their run, Cunniffe (Shrewsbury, Mass.) watched closely and fell in love with SMU’s possession-based play style and willingness to dominate the ball. He saw himself fitting into the system seamlessly.
After 11 months of conversations with SMU, it all came together when Cunniffe, a center back on the FC Greater Boston Bolts MLS Next team, verbally committed to the Mustangs in late July for the Class of 2030.
