On the latest episode of New England Soccer Journal’s “The Goal” podcast, we previewed the New England boys club soccer spring season.
Platforms across the region, such as MLS Next and ECNL, are slated to return to regular season action over the next couple of weeks. That’s, of course, weather permitting.
Hosts Matt Langone and Matt Doherty focused the discussion on MLS Next and ECNL Boys, and provided their thoughts on teams and players to watch, as the chase for postseason qualification begins. They also discussed key upcoming national events, like Generation adidas Cup, the Jefferson Cup, and more.

On club action contributing to a surge in Class of 2026 college commitments:
Langone: “On the boys side of things, we’ve updated our running (commitment) databases. Yes, the 2027 class is still that slow drip where we’re not even at double-digit names yet on that list, but it’s good to see that the 2026 names are starting to fill out. I think that’s probably coming off the prep season and the high school season, then there was that ECNL (Florida) showcase in January for the boys. But I think more is starting to fall, which is good to see, and I think the spring is going to be big for that.”

On a team to keep an eye on:
Doherty: “I know last year the FSA U-17 team, I saw them play and they made the national playoffs. Now, they’re U-19s. That has to be a team to watch, right? They can make some noise at that age. I know a lot of their players are committed at this point, but still a team to follow.”
On a key theme that will play out this spring:
Doherty: “I think the 2027s and 2028s, just trying to become more familiar with those classes. So getting out to some regular season games in March and April and seeing IFA, Bolts, Bayside, Beachside, those types of clubs, and just seeing what the next wave of talent looks like.”
