In more ways than one, Oakwood's U-19 Development Academy team is closely linked with University of Connecticut men's soccer.
Its head coach, Kevin Bacher, was an assistant for the Huskies from 2002-11. This past summer, forward Chris Alwang (Weston, Conn.) committed to the program. Then in mid August, defender Joey Zarra (Cheshire, Conn.) did the same.
Earlier this week, a fourth connection arose when midfielder Owen Guglielmino (Cheshire, Conn.) announced his verbal commitment to UConn. Guglielmino said it’s “really special” being part of their Class of 2019 alongside his two teammates, especially a lifelong friend in Zarra.
“When I first heard that UConn was interested, I wasn’t shocked, but I was really, really excited,” Guglielmino said. “At Oakwood, we’ve had success and I’ve been in that wave of teams and players making it far. But I wasn’t really expecting it.”
