BROOKLINE, Mass. — As Wally Lawrence sprinted down the middle of the field in the final minutes of regulation, the Brookline senior peeked over his shoulder and spotted a sliver of hope.
“I saw the two defenders coming together and thought there might be a scoring chance,” recalled Lawrence.
What happened next sent Parsons Field into a frenzy. Lawrence controlled a bouncing ball with his knee, split the two defenders and created enough space to laser a right-footed strike into the back of the net. The Brookline student section erupted and Warrior players sprinted to join them by the bleachers as Lawrence’s breakaway goal in the 89th minute delivered 21st-seeded Brookline a stunning 3-2 win over No. 28 Winchester in an MIAA Division 1 Round of 16 matchup on a rainy Monday afternoon.
Down 2-0 with 23 minutes left, Brookline’s season appeared to be nearing its end. But thanks to three unanswered goals capped by Lawrence’s heroics, the Warriors eked out a win in a back-and-forth affair and advanced to play Concord-Carlisle in the quarterfinals, the program’s deepest state tournament run since capturing the Division 1 title in 2021.
“Luckily, I found the right side of the net,” said Lawrence. “When we were losing, I knew we had a chance. This team battles hard through every little piece of adversity, so I knew we were going to come back.”
