As the bright lights shined on him for the first time, Matt Turner paused for a moment to reflect on his circuitous journey. A million things ran through Turner’s mind after his MLS debut, but he made sure to touch upon his route to this unexpected moment. His arrival as the opening day starter in goal for the New England Revolution did not occur by chance. He did not jump from third-string to first-string through preference or whim.
Turner’s story — one started as a novice goalkeeper in his teens back in New Jersey and twisted through four years at Fairfield and two years in reserve with the Revs — includes hefty dollops of belief and persistence and lots of miles logged between Boston and Richmond over the past couple of years.
