The inherent beauty of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament is that every contestant — from division one to the lower levels of the American soccer pyramid — has the chance to win it. And recently, one local club authored a magical run toward that goal.
Boston-based GPS Omens, a team that plays in the Bay State Soccer League (USASA), duly knocked out a pair of established fourth-division sides before its storybook run came to a heartbreaking end against USL side Rochester Rhinos.
Despite their status as an amateur outfit, the boys from Beantown — all of whom work full-time jobs and play on the weekends — nevertheless showed why the tournament can produce such memorable runs.
